Australian-first: Banks shareholder resolution on deforestation lodged at NAB

Yesterday SIX, together with national environment organisation Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) and ethical investment heavyweights Melior Investment Management and Australian Ethical, co-filed a shareholder resolution to National Australia Bank Limited (ASX:NAB).

This Australian-first bank shareholder resolution urges NAB to come clean on how much money they are lending to customers involved in deforestation and put in place a clear policy to stop funding deforestation.

Over 150+ shareholders made this possible, not only unlocking our right to lodge a resolution (100 shareholders) but sailing right past it, demonstrating how deeply shareholders care about NAB doing all it can to tackle financed deforestation and help protect Australia’s unique wildlife, forests and bush.

The other exciting part? We’re not done yet! Keep an eye on our social media for later this week, as we’re preparing to lodge a similar resolution to Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ASX:ANZ) - the banks with the second-most exposure to deforestation.

The media is already taking notice of our collective shareholder power - check out the coverage in The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Financial Review, Yahoo Finance and FS Sustainability

2025 is shaping up to be a huge year of shareholder resolutions for nature, not only at the banks!

Shareholders are demanding supermarkets Coles and Woolworths help save the engaged Maugean Skate from the threats of salmon farming in Macquarie Harbour. And together with the Wilderness Society, shareholders are also calling out Woolworths for winding back its commitments on deforestation linked to beef, while relying on dodgy certifications for timber products like pallets.

Big companies need to do much more to protect our unique wildlife, forests, bush and waterways. And if they don’t, SIX and our growing community of shareholder activists and partners like ACF will be there to turn up the pressure and force them to act.
