We are delighted to share some big news on our campaign with NGO partners World Animal Protection, urging travel company Webjet to stop cashing in on animal suffering.

Today, Webjet have publicly announced that they will be developing and implementing an animal welfare policy - and will be collaborating with World Animal Protection to make sure they get it right.

It’s a huge step in the right direction for animals, for travelers - and for Webjet’s investors.   And it’s a huge reminder of how powerful it is when shareholders raise their voices, telling their companies that they don’t want to be involved in profiting off animal suffering.

Suzanne Milthorpe, Head of Campaigns for World Animal Protection Australia, said:

"We welcome Webjet’s plans to develop an animal welfare policy, and we’re excited to be collaborating with them on this important piece of work."

Webjet representatives have said:

"We are now actively working with World Animal Protection towards developing and implementing an animal welfare policy to guide future partnerships and uphold the quality and responsibility of experiences available through our platform.”

A reminder of how we got here. Back in 2023, Webjet began partnering with Hong Kong-based online travel agency Klook and started selling cruel experiences that exploit wild animals.

World Animal Protection investigated and found that Webjet offered captive wildlife experience to customers; many of which are deemed “low welfare” due to mistreatment of animals, disease, inadequate housing and severe lack of enrichment.

Despite engagement following World Animal Protection’s exposé on Webjet, the company failed to take action to end the sale of animal suffering - meaning they were continuing to expose their investors to risk.

So in early 2025, SIX partnered up with World Animal Protection to bring our power of shareholder activism to the campaign.

We launched our involvement, began seeking Webjet shareholders, and were prepared to take this issue to a resolution if the company continued to fail animals, travellers and investors.

But the encouraging news is we didn’t need to go that far. Soon Webjet began to listen and engage with World Animal Protection and SIX, and today have made this great announcement public.

It’s a demonstration of the power that shareholders can bring to important NGO campaigns.

SIX’s involvement in the campaign will wrap up soon, but we will keep in contact with our fantastic NGO partners about other ways to use shareholder activism to ensure animal welfare.
