Did you know Australia holds the unfortunate title of being a global deforestation hotspot? We lead the world in mammal extinctions and are in second place on biodiversity loss.
Many of the species we love are on the brink of extinction. And behind nearly every business that’s bulldozing the bush, is a bank.
Banks are contributing to the destruction of nature through their portfolios, by lending to customers clearing forests and woodland.
National Australian Bank Limited (ASX: NAB) is exposed to twice as much deforestation as any other bank - followed by Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ASX: ANZ).1 And both banks lack a “no deforestation” commitment.

SIX is teaming up with national environment organisation Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), using shareholder power to tackle the big issue of big banks financing deforestation.
ACF and SIX will formally put deforestation on the banks’ AGM agendas, requesting that they: come clean on how much money they are lending to customers involved in deforestation; and put a clear policy in place to stop funding deforestation.
Early October is the deadline to reach 100 shareholders and lodge a shareholder resolution.
If you’re already a NAB and/or ANZ shareholder, simply fill in the agency agreement to join the campaign. If you’re not a NAB and/or ANZ shareholder but want to join the campaign, the SIX app makes it easy to do so.
With your help, let's get nature on the big banks' agenda in 2025!
