Westpac, keep Palantir tech out of our banking

With GetUp, we're calling on big bank Westpac to reconsider their problematic partnership with US tech company Palantir.

Why this campaign

In 2021, big bank Westpac Banking Corporation (ASX:WBC) quietly signed a contract with US tech company Palantir - the same company whose technology is behind US Immigration Customs & Enforcement (ICE) deportations and has been linked to the genocide in Gaza.

Westpac seems to be the only one of the big four banks to work with Palantir, and it’s raising serious concerns for shareholders, customers and the broader community.

Our recent SIX & GetUp campaign at Coles pushed the supermarket to announce they would not continue their contract with Palantir beyond 2027. A big win for shareholder power and getting Palantir’s technology out of our everyday shopping!

We’re now pivoting to Westpac, with some big questions about why they are working with Palantir.

SIX and GetUp are seeking 100+ Westpac shareholders to unlock our right to lodge a shareholder resolution or members’ statement, putting this issue in the spotlight at the company Annual General Meeting (AGM) later in the year.

If you already own Westpac shares, simply sign SIX’s agency agreement to join the campaign. Or you can create a SIX trading account and use the SIX platform to purchase shares in Westpac.

The problem

  • Human rights violations: Palantir has been connected to potential and actual human rights violations across multiple countries. It has been criticized by the UN for profiting off Israel’s occupation of Palestine, through allegedly offering AI-assisted targeting systems to the IDF.1 Palantir also built software for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to identify targets for its unlawful detentions and violent raids2. Why is Westpac choosing to work with this company, when there are other data and analytics companies they could engage with instead?

  • Privacy concerns: This contract raises concerns about what information Palantir has access to, given the company has been tied to privacy violations in the past. For instance, in the UK Palantir indicated it only processes National Healthcare System (NHS) data - then it emerged Palantir staff had access to identifiable patient data and personal records on up to 1.5 million NHS employees3. Human rights organisation Digital Rights Watch named the recent Coles-Palantir partnership as part of a “worrying trend” of Australian companies choosing to work with Palantir4 - a trend that Westpac, too, has opted into.

  • Lack of transparency: There is little public information from Westpac on what the contract covers, how long it will run for, and if Palantir can access customer data (and if so, what data).

The opportunity

  • Shareholder and community power is building: There is a growing movement, which SIX and GetUp are a key part of, for big companies to reconsider working with a partner as problematic as Palantir. With this issue firmly in the public spotlight, now is the time to seize the moment and ask one such company, Westpac, to explain their decision.

  • Westpac’s AGM is just around the corner: With Westpac’s AGM confirmed for 16 December, we have a chance to put these key questions front and centre in front of the board, other shareholders, and the media. Plus, by submitting a shareholder resolution this could push Westpac to do the right thing even prior to the AGM.

  • Wins are possible - and recent! We have seen how shareholder and community pressure can push big corporations to do the right thing, like Coles agreeing not to continue their Palantir contract. We’ve done it once, let’s do it again.
